The Philippine Society of Colorectal Surgeons (PSCRS) successfully held its second national convention on colorectal surgery last March 24-26 at the Diamond Hotel, Manila. Scientific sessions, cine-clinics, and the first full laparoscopic colorectal surgery workshop in the country were conducted throughout these 3 days, with foreign faculty from Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia sharing their expertise alongside local experts. In attendance were over 150 General and Colorectal Surgeons from all over the country.
Realizing also the need to update nurses on recent trends, an advanced nursing workshop on enterostomal nursing and operative nursing on minimally invasive colorectal surgery were also held, with the cooperation of the Enterostomal Therapy Nurses Association of the Philippines (ETNAP) and the Operating Room Nurses of the Philippines (ORNAP). In attendance were over 50 nurses.
In commemoration of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a well-received lay fora was also held with topics ranging from stress management, colorectal cancer screening, robotics for rectal cancer surgery, patient partnership, and cancer support group services. In attendance were members from the Ostomy Association of the Philippines and the Carewell Community.

Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in the world, and the 3rd leading cause of cancer death in the Philippines, with the number of cases expected to increase each year. The PSCRS realizes that much still has to be done to improve survival after colorectal cancer treatment in the country. To achieve this, the main advocacy of the PSCRS is to elevate the standards of colorectal surgery nationwide. Under the able leadership of Dr. Manuel Francisco T. Roxas, the PSCRS is gaining in strength and adherence to best meet this challenge. Future projects this year include workshops on rectal cancer and minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
